How to prep your home for Christmas

Content Author

2020 has been a strange year for most of us, so it’s about time we enjoyed a bit of festive cheer! With Christmas now just around the corner, there’s no better time to start preparing our homes for this very special time of year.

The uncertainty outside may continue but inside our homes, we can start making plans for a memorable Christmas 2020. Here are a few ways to prep your home for Christmas, whether it’s a small celebration or a grander gathering (social restrictions allowing, of course!).

Finish the DIY jobs you’ve started

Given the lockdown situation, many of us have more time on our hands at home – so there’s no excuse for not finishing those DIY jobs that you’ve never got round to finishing (or even starting!). Small paint jobs, replacing hooks or hinges, mending cracks – whatever the job, it’s worth doing if it’ll make your home that bit nicer this Christmas.

Decide on dining arrangements

It’s traditional to enjoy some special meals together at Christmas, but whether it’s just you and your partner or a bigger family gathering, you’ll want to give some thought to dining arrangements. Making sure there are enough chairs is one consideration, but you might need to check that the table is big enough, too – and that there’s enough crockery and cutlery for everyone to enjoy the delicious Christmas food you plan to serve! Check out some of the retailers in Dividebuy shops for any extra bits you need to get your dining arrangements sorted.

Solve sleeping situations

If you’re planning to have any guests staying over this Christmas, you’ll want to check the available space and figure out how best to accommodate your guests. You don’t want the grandparents to end up sleeping on the floor! It might be time to invest in a guest bed, or perhaps an inflatable bed will suffice for a night in a smaller space. Alternatively, a sofa bed could be the ideal solution – take a look at our home furnishings retailers if you’re planning to invest in some guest furniture.

Design the day’s décor

Work with the space you have at home to plan how you’ll decorate this year. Perhaps you’ll bring out the same tried-and-trusted decorations from previous years, but if you’ve made changes to the colour scheme or layout of your home since last Christmas, it might be time for a refresh. You may want to liven things up with some modern designs or add a traditional touch with fresh wreaths or a table centrepiece – whatever you decide to do, use the space and colours in your home to create something special.

Create a cosy ambience

Nothing beats coming in from the chill to some cosy comforts at Christmas, and there are lots of ways to add a bit of welcoming warmth to your home. If you have an open fire or a log burner, scented firelighters are one way to add a warm, festive touch, but candles are just as effective for homes without a fireplace. Snug blankets and fluffy cushions add warmth and texture, too – perfect for curling up on the sofa with a warming tipple after Christmas dinner.

However you plan to prep your home, you can spread the cost of Christmas 2020 by shopping with our retailers. You’ll find everything from sofa beds and DIY kits to extending dining tables and Christmas decorations. It’s all available with our zero per cent finance, so you can buy now and pay at a time that suits you, at no extra cost. Find out more about how DivideBuy works.
